What is Junior Gold Hockey?
by Kris Swanson, Registration Director
The Metro Hockey League (MHL) coordinates a multi-district hockey league for boys who have completed the Bantam level and are not playing on a high school hockey team but would still like to play hockey. Proof of enrollment in High School is required. MHL games are generally played in the metro area, typically within a one hour drive from Roseville. They offer 3 levels of play: Junior Gold A (JGA), Junior Gold B (JGB) and 16 and Under (16U). Junior Gold A and B are determined by tryouts. Those who qualify for 16U by age CAN try out for A or B, if desired, or if there are not enough players to form a 16U team. The age ranges follow MN Hockey Guidelines and run July 1 to June 30.
RAYHA coordinates the registration and team rosters for Roseville teams to participate in the MHL Junior Gold program. Registration during the September registration dates is strongly encouraged in order to help plan the potential number of teams and playing level(s). Registration costs are comparable to other Roseville team fees and currently, registration fee checks are held until after High School try-outs are complete and it is confirmed that a player will be participating in the JR Gold Program. Junior Gold try-outs are typically held in Mid-November and any player registering after the September Registration is subject to a late registration fee.
JGA and JGB tryouts are coordinated by the Traveling Director. If a player is not able to attend the tryouts, they need to contact the traveling director to determine if there is a spot remaining on any of the rostered teams.
Once RAYHA's Junior Gold teams are formed, check the Metro Hockey League website http://www.metrohockeyleague.com/ for schedules and results for the league but don't forget the RAYHA website for your team info.
