Is Roseville where my child should play hockey?

Where to play is determined by the rules of Minnesota Hockey (MH.) The most current information on this policy can be found at: http://www.minnesotahockey.org/news_article/show/42548?referrer_id=80568

The boundaries of the geographical area served by each local association are determined by MH and recorded in the Affiliate Agreements. The current policy for 2010-11 is:

RESIDENCY RULE

1. Youth Hockey players must register and participate with the association whose boundaries incorporate the player’s residence. If a player desires to participate on a team from any other association, the player must obtain a waiver.
a. All waiver requests must be submitted on a current Waiver Form provided by MH.
b. The Waiver Form must indicate the reason for the waiver request. (school attendance, cut from Home Association's travel program, co-op team, etc.).
c. Any conditions that apply to a waiver must be indicated on the Waiver Form and initialed by all parties executing the waiver.
d. Waiver Forms must be signed by the releasing and receiving association presidents before being submitted to the District Director for approval. If the releasing and receiving associations are in two districts, the waiver form must be submitted to both District Directors for approval.

2. Definitions
Association of Residence – the association whose boundaries incorporate the player's residence.

Association of School Attendance – the association whose boundaries incorporate the location of the school the player attends.

Home Association – either the Association of Residence, or the Association of School Attendance to which a player has been properly waived.

3. A waiver shall be granted to any player who wishes to participate in the MH association whose boundaries incorporate the school in which the player is enrolled and is attending. For schools with multiple campuses, the "main" campus shall prevail unless agreed otherwise by the affected District Director(s). Players waived based on school choice shall be deemed to be members of their Association of School Attendance and shall have full rights and privileges accorded to all members of that association, including voting rights. (Exception – see "Changing Schools" below.) Players receiving a waiver based on school attendance shall register with their Association of School Attendance for as long as they are qualified students of that school (including the first year).

For more information visit the Participation Rule page on the Minnesota Hockey website.

How old do you have to be to play hockey in Roseville?
A player must turn 5 by June 30th or be starting kindergarten in the fall.

My 5 year old wants to try hockey because all of her friends play but isn't it really expensive to buy all that equipment?
If you are a first year player at the initiation levels (Mite or Mini-Mite) you could be eligible to borrow a full set of equipment for the season. Contact Equipment Director Mike O’Neill for more information.

How long is the season?
Warm up ice sessions begin in mid- September. Team placement is complete for most players by mid-October. Traveling teams begin playoffs in late February and can play into March. House teams finish their season in mid-March at the House Tournament.

What happens if we cannot show up for a practice/game?
Communicate with your player’s coach about conflicts with the schedule.

Are there a lot of practices at 5 am?
NO. Each team may end up with a 6 am practice or two, but that is the earliest. And there are very few of the early ice times for each team. The early ice times are given to older teams whenever possible.

My child is new to skating, can he/she play down a level?
We encourage new players to skate with their age level, however in some situations brand new players at the Mite level (7 & 8 year olds) can choose to play down a level with Mini-Mites (5 & 6 year olds.) Please consult with a board member to determine the appropriate level for your child.

How many times a week will my child skate?
Mini-Mites and Mites will skate 3 times per week. C Squirts will be on the ice 3-4 times per week. Traveling teams can be on the ice as many as 6 or 7 days per week.

Can my child play with friends?
Requests to play with friends will be accepted at the Initiation levels only (Mini-Mite and Mite.) Requests will be considered but not guaranteed when teams are formed.

What days of the week do Mites and Mini-Mites skate?
For the youngest 2 age groups - they usually play weekend mornings (games might be Sunday afternoons) and Wednesdays at 5 or 6:15. A typical practice or game will be just one hour in length. The schedule can vary slightly.

Are practices and games for younger kids typically during the daytime on weekends, evening, late night or early morning hours?
Saturday morning times will typically be between 8 and noon but you may get a 7:30 time once or twice - the later evening and really early mornings are scheduled for the older kids (typically PeeWee and above). Game Sundays might be between 2:00 and 5:00 (every other weekend Dec-Feb)

Do practices and games rotate among parks (outside) within the city of Roseville or are they typically at the same location all the time?  Are any of the practices or games inside?
Practices and games will typically be at Roseville Arena, Oscar Johnson arena, and outside at the Oval.

What is the typical total approximate cost (national fees local fees) for Mini Mites, not including equipment?
The $30 USA hockey fee is waived for skaters under age 6 (birth year 2004 or later; the registration must still be completed to get the confirmation number) so you should only be charged the $10 MN Hockey fee. Roseville’s 2009 Mini-Mite registration fee was $30. There may also be a required fundraiser - candy sales or a volunteer requirement - that would cost money if you choose the buyout option. Options will exist for cost recovery. More details on exact 2010 costs will be available later this summer. If your team chooses to put names on jerseys, it's usually about $4 per player. Some years we have to pay $7-8 for hockey socks as well - depends on the Booster club donation. There will be loaner equipment available again this year for new players.

How much does it cost for older kids to play?
All players 6 & up need to pay the USA hockey $30 fee and the MN Hockey $10 fee. (register and pay these fees at
www.usahockey.com BEFORE RAYHA registration!)
Roseville registration fees and additional player costs vary according to level. Please see the registration form for more information. (
RAYHA registration form will be available later this summer)

Is there financial assistance available to cover registration fees?
For more information about financial assistance, please contact RAYHA's Treasurer, . (click on link to send an email or call 651.415.0933.)

*For new players or any player not registered with RAYHA for the 2009-10 season, please also bring a copy of your government issued birth certificate.

Is there a newsletter or mailing list or should I check regularly to the website for registration information and other updates?
RAYHA Website: www.rosevillehockey.org. The website contains important information for all members and is updated throughout the year. Members are encouraged to visit the site regularly. Teams are encouraged to use the website to communicate bulletins and team schedules.

Email is encouraged as the primary source of communication for all RAYHA teams and members. During registration, all RAYHA members can elect to "opt-in" to receive email communications from teams and from the association. Permission to use email address(es) as a contact for RAYHA-only communication is given by members on the registration form each year. RAYHA sends out important information to all members via email throughout the year and works hard to limit the number of communications that are sent out to all members.
